NXT UK Takeover Dublin Had Finn Balor vs Edge Planned

Irish fans missed out on a chance to see Finn Balor vs Edge at the cancelled NXT UK Takeover Dublin event.

The event was supposed to be the first WWE PLE to take place in Ireland. The country has long been starved of a top WWE show. However, they have always come out in droves when the wrestling came to town.

22,000 fans saw a Smackdown house show in 2005, showing how hungry they are for WWE’s product. Their prayers were finally answered in 2020, when NXT UK Takeover: Dublin was announced to to take place.

Sadly, due to the pandemic, the show was pushed back from April 2022 to October the same year. As the pandemic continued, it was quietly shelved. As if 2024, Ireland still haven’t had a WWE PLE (although that looks set to change in 2025).

If fans weren’t gutted about missing out already, they will be when they hear what matches were planned for the event. Finn Balor spoke with the What’s The Story Podcast, where he revealed that Edge vs Finn Balor was the planned match for the NXT UK event.

He went on to add that once the show was moved back to October, Finn Balor vs WALTER was the new main event. In the end, both those matches did take place in the WWE, just not on the cancelled Irish pay per view.

“We were building to a Dublin TakeOver.” Finn Balor said. “It was supposed to happen in April 2020 when things shutdown. It got postponed until October and eventually got canceled. The match was supposed to be Finn Balor vs. Edge. That got kind of canceled and postponed and we started to work towards me and WALTER. Then the wheels fell off.”
