Luke Jacobs: Progress World Title Win Is Only The Beginning

Luke Jacobs looks set to be the next big wrestler to come from the United Kingdom.

The Englishman recently became a world champion at only 23. He sits on top of the British Wrestling scene, yet has nowhere to go but up from here.

Jacobs defeated Kid Lykos to become the Progress World Champion at Progress Chapter 139: The Devil On My Shoulder. He put the champion away in just nine minutes, giving a dominant performance in front of a packed Electric Ballroom in London.

Just six years since making his debut in wrestling, Luke Jacobs is showing why he has a future in the UK and abroad as a top-class professional wrestler.

Luke Jacobs Has Only Been Wrestling Since 2018

Despite being just 23-years-old, Luke Jacobs has shown ability beyond his years in wrestling.

Luke Jacobs trained to wrestle at FutureShock in 2016. He was just 15 at the time, and later moved on to Fighting Spirit to learn from former WWE stars Zack Gibson and James Drake.

Due to his age, the Englishman had to wait until 2018 to first step into the ring. He did so in a six-man tag match at FutureShock UnderGround #27 on June 16, 2018.

Jacobs teamed with Ethan Allen and Ashton Smith to defeat Cyanide and WonderLand (Henry T. Grodd and Noah), winning his debut match in professional wrestling.

He rose through the ranks quickly, and showcased some incredible potential. Jacobs developed a Japanese-style of wrestling, focusing on big throws and huge strikes to beat his opponent.

He cited stars of All-Japan Pro Wrestling, naming Stan Hansen, Kenta Kobashi and Mitsuharu Misawa as his inspirations. It is obvious that he was inspired by those legends every time he steps into the ring.

He Has A Huge Future In Wrestling After Progress World Title Win

Luke Jacobs’ big title win at Progress Chapter 169 could be the start of a huge step to become a worldwide wrestling star.

The title win was well-earned. His match over the past few years have been the best in the UK. There’s a reason he’s regularly featured from promotions like RevPro and Progress.

Despite his age, he shows great maturity in the ring, and it’s scary to think how good he will get in the years to come.

It seems unlikely that Luke Jacobs will be in the UK forever. His style seems tailor-made for a run in Japan – his matches against Tomohiro Ishii and KENTA last year proved that.

They are among Luke Jacobs’ best matches, and he would fit in perfectly in NJPW or NOAH with his hard-hitting style. His size also gives him a big advantage, as does the big contingent of Brits in New Japan at the moment.

Gabe Kidd, Callum Newman and Gideon Gray are among just a few of the Englishman currently in Japan. They, along with Will Ospreay and Zack Sabre Jr, have created an atmosphere where British stars could thrive.

I don’t see WWE or AEW going for him just yet. A run in Japan, becoming a hoss-type wrestler for one of the factions, would be ideal. It could help take Luke Jacobs to the next level after becoming one of the top wrestlers in the UK.
