Big wrestling stars from Scotland are hard to come by these days, but we’ve managed to come up with a list of the best Scottish wrestlers to wrestle inside a WWE ring
It’s fair to say that Scottish wrestlers in WWE haven’t had the best impact. There have been few that you could say set the WWE alight. However, there have been some. And if there are some, there is a best Scottish wrestler.
Of course, there is one man that will be named the best Scottish wrestler in WWE history. He will be at the top of this list, due to his stature in the ring and his achievements (winning the WWE Championship and the Royal Rumble being key ones).
One notable name missing out is Roddy Piper. Despite being billed from Scotland, he was not one of the best Scottish wrestlers. He was, in fact, Canadian, and high on the list of the best Canadian wrestlers of all time.
5. The Highlanders
Really scraping the bottom of the barrel here, but due to the lack of Scots making it in the WWE, Rory and Robbie McAllister. The pair were known as The Highlanders, referencing the incredible Scottish Highlands.
The team wrestled for two years in the WWE, between 2006 and 2008. They were portrayed as two rough fighters, but never achieved success.
They were fired by the WWE in 2008, after Rory was spotted in the crowd at a TNA, and shown on camera by the promotion. Their run in WWE wasn’t quite that impressive, but the Scottish duo were certainly from Scotland, and wrestled in the WWE. That alone gets them on this list.
4. Alba Fyre (Kay Lee Ray)
As Alba Fyre, she has become one of the most hated heels in the NXT women’s division. However, she was even better as the worst human being ever in NXT UK.
When she was known as Kay Lee Ray, Alba Fyre earned her stripes as one of the best Scottish wrestlers in WWE history. She defeated Toni Storm at NXT UK: Cardiff, to win the NXT UK Women’s Championship.
She currently holds the record for the title’s longest ever reign. She was the champ for 649 days, and with NXT UK now being shut down, nobody will ever take away her accolade.
3. Piper Niven (Doudrop)
Piper Niven, also known as Viper, is a Scottish professional wrestler who made her debut in WWE in 2019 as part of the NXT UK brand. The Scot began her wrestling career in 2009 and has competed in various promotions in the UK, Japan, and the United States.
In NXT UK, Niven quickly established herself as a dominant force, forming a tag team with NXT UK Women’s Champion, Toni Storm.
Her combination of power, agility, and technical skill made her a formidable opponent, and she quickly became a fan-favourite.
Piper Niven’s most significant feud in NXT UK was against NXT UK Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley, with the two engaging in a series of hard-hitting matches.
Despite coming up short in her quest for the title, Niven’s performances earned her a spot in the inaugural Mae Young Classic tournament, where she impressed fans and critics alike with her unique in-ring style.
Piper Niven is a two-time WWE 24/7 Champion in the WWE, as well as a former Women’s Tag Team Champion.
2. Noam Dar
Noam Dar made his debut in the company as part of the Cruiserweight Classic tournament, where he impressed fans and officials alike with his technical abilities and unique personality.
Dar has since become a regular member of the WWE roster, primarily performing on the NXT UK brand and on the all-cruiserweight show, 205 Live.
In his time with WWE, Dar was known for his flamboyant personality and impressive in-ring skills. He also found success in his teaming with Alicia Fox, with many in particular finding humour in his Scottish pronunciation of her last name.
He is a skilled high-flyer and submission specialist, capable of executing a wide range of moves that keep his opponents guessing. Dar has also shown a willingness to take risks in the ring, often incorporating acrobatic maneuvers into his matches.
1. Drew McIntyre
Who else could be top of the list than Drew McIntyre? He is by far the best Scottish wrestler in the company’s history, and one of the biggest stars they have at the moments.
It took a long time for a British wrestler to become the WWE Champion. British Bulldog failed. William Regal failed. Pirate Paul Burchill failed.
But the chosen one did not fail. Well, initially he did fail. His original run in WWE came too soon for the man from Glasgow, and it wasn’t until his release and reinvention in ICW that he finally became the man who could be the top guy in WWE.
He left WWE in 2014 after being a part of “Three Man Band”, a comedy jobber stable. He returned a world champion prospect and the newest member of NXT.
McIntyre quickly climbed the ranks of NXT and became NXT Champion within a year of signing. When he was called onto the main roster, he soon teamed with Dolph Ziggler and became a WWE Tag Team Champion. This was his first main roster championship since 2010.
Drew won the 2020 Royal Rumble, and at WrestleMania defeated Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship. He finally fulfilled the destiny placed upon him by Vince McMahon, as the Chosen One became the first British WWE Champion and one of the best British wrestlers of all time.
