After his two impressive appearances on AEW, Tommy Billington is on his way to being Britain’s next wrestling star.
The Wigan-born wrestler is only 23-years-old, but has shown remarkable progress in the ring already. His recent appearances in AEW have shown just how he can perform on a big stage, and has a bright future ahead of him.
The youngster was trained in the UK, in the famous Snake Pit in Wigan. This is the same place where the original Dynamite Kid was trained, as well as other legends like Karl Gotch, Billy Robinson and Tatsumi Fujinami.
Tommy Billington Is The Nephew Of The Dynamite Kid
The name “Tommy Billington” is probably one you are familiar with. The new AEW star shares his name with his uncle, who was the famous (or infamous) Dynamite Kid.
Billington has carried on the legacy of his uncle in pro-wrestling by adopting his moniker and wrestling style. He wrestles a fast-paced, hard-hitting style, the same one innovated by the Dynamite Kid. He is also a spitting image of the original Tom Billington, and uses his “Dynamite Kid” nickname for himself.
Tommy Billington has a brother in wrestling too, and they team together regular. Tommy and Mark Billington, named for their uncle and father, wrestle as the “Billington Bulldogs”.
They compete mainly in the UK and Canada, paying tribute to the “British Bulldogs” tag team, which comprised their uncles Dynamite Kid and Davey Boy Smith.
The brothers even teamed with British Bulldog Jr in MLW as a trios team. They are cousins of Harry Smith, who grew up in Canada to an English father and Canadian mother.
He Impressed In His Debut Matches In AEW
Despite being just 23-years-old, Tommy Billington has already appeared for a major American wrestling promotion.
Tommy Billington’s first match in AEW was against Dax Harwood on the May 11th, 2024 episode of AEW Collision. He was billed as “Dynamite Kid” Tommy Billington, and was instantly recognisable to the fans in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. His uncle was a legend in Canada, so he had instant name recognition in the country.
He lost the match, but impressed the crowd. They cheered him as if he were a hometown hero, getting behind the young star. Harwood even let him stay in the ring alone after the match, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd on his debut in AEW.
His second appearance came two months later, also on AEW Collsion. Tommy Billington faced Konosuke Takeshita, as Don Callis waxed lyrical about his connections to the original Dynamite Kid.
The youngster wrestler impressed against the Japanese star. He showed speed and resilience reminiscent of his father, although he struggled under the power of Takeshita. Despite impressing, he lost the match when Takeshita binned Billington for the victory.
After the bout, Don Callis even offered him a chance to join his family. He refused, keeping himself as a babyface as the crowd erupted with cheers. He was saved from a beat down by FTR, and looks to be aligned with them going forward.
At just 23, Tommy Billington is an impressive wrestler already. He looks so much like his uncle, both in his appearance and his in-ring style. If he can avoid the pitfalls of injury and drug abuse of his namesake, then the new Dynamite Kid can become the next big star in British wrestling.
