Will Ospreay Awarded 39th Five-Star Match Rating

Will Ospreay just keeps putting on five-star matches.

The English wrestler may have lost to Swerve Strickland at Forbidden Door, but he came out of it with an all-time great performance. His hesitancy to use the Tiger Driver 91′ cost him the chance to become AEW World Champion at the end of a gruelling match.

However, despite the loss, Will Ospreay extended his lead at the top of the list of the most five-star matches in history. Ospreay was awarded his 39th five-star match in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter on July 5th 2024, for the Will Ospreay vs Swerve Strickland match at Forbidden Door.

It actually broke the five-star scale, with Dave Meltzer giving the out a 5.5 rating. He followed it up with a 4.5 star match against Daniel Garcia on Dynamite, as the British star adds to his already impressive canon.

Despit the impressive rating from Meltzer, this isn’t even close to being Will Ospreay’s best match. He has achieved six stars or more six times already by the age of 31. His best match was his clash with Bryan Danielson at AEW Dynasty, which smashed the scale at 6.5 stars.
