Marty Scurll has revealed that AEW wanted to bring in Goldberg when Tony Khan first started the company.

The former Undisputed British Heavyweight Champion was in talks to join the company when it first launched in 2019.

He was in discussion with Tony Khan in 2018 but couldn’t join right away due to his NJPW not expiring at the same time as the rest of the group.

Marty Scurll would eventually have more talks when his deal expired in 2020 but chose to sign a multi-year, million-dollar deal to become the ROH booker instead.

However, when he did talk to Tony Khan about AEW, the discussions were about bringing WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg into the company.

During a conversation with the I Love Wrestling Podcast, Marty Scurll revealed that he talked with Tony Khan about Goldberg joining AEW. He wanted the former WCW Champion to wrestle new stars like Rey Fenix or Pentagon, rather than old foes like Chris Jericho.

“When there were talks about AEW, I remember we had dinner with Tony Khan, and he spoke about possibly bringing Goldberg in.” Marty Scurll said.

“I told him, ‘It will work, but it will work because we’ll do a pay-per-view, and Goldberg will be on it—not necessarily headlining, but he’ll be on the card.”

“And he’s not going to wrestle someone like Christ Jericho, he’s going to wrestle Pentagon Jr. or Rey Fenix. People are going to be like, ‘What is this?’ That’s the kind of match we want—it’ll make people say, ‘Whoa'”

“And I guess me versus Okada at the time was one of those types of matches.” Marty Scurll added.
