Callum Newman: Will Ospreay Kept Me In School & Wrestling

Callum Newman wouldn’t be a wrestler if not for Will Ospreay.

The Englishman has had a meteoric rise in the wrestling business. He started as a sixteen year old, earning a wrestling scholarship from WrestleTalk. It was the first of its kind, and Callum Newman took full advantage of it.

He became a protégé of Will Ospreay, as one of his Frontline Wrestling ‘young lions’. He was recruited by Ospreay to join him in Japan, becoming a member of his United Empire stable. Newman remains part of United Empire, even after Ospreay left to join AEW in 2024.

However, Will Ospreay had a bigger impact on Callum Newman’s career than anybody expected. The English spoke about it on the documentary “Will Ospreay: Closing My Chapter” on YouTube. This documented Ospreay’s exit from NJPW, and “The Prince of Pace” spoke to the camera about his history with the Aerial Assassin.

Callum Newman revealed that Will Ospreay helped him remain in school while training to wrestle. The former IWGP World Heavyweight Champion would check up on, making sure he was behaving well at home and completing all of his exams.

He even spoke to Newman’s parents when the youngster was about to quit the business. He called him an “idiot” if he didn’t. This was because of how talented Ospreay viewed Callum Newman, and didn’t want him to waste it.

“I’ve got brothers, but I’ve never looked up to any of them. Apart from [Will Ospreay].” Callum Newman said. ” He kept me in school. He made sure I was doing my exams. Even with wrestling him back and forth and made sure I was behaving at home with my mum and dad.”

“He pulled my mum and dad at the Brixton one, and said ‘If he quits, he’s an idiot’. It was because I went up to him that day and said, ‘Thanks for everything. This is my last training session. You’ve made it wonderful, thank you.”
