Mariah May learnt some crucial lessons when working on the indie scene.

The English wrestler toiled for years on the UK indies before finally getting her break. Despite suffering abuse at the hands of Sid Scala as a trainee, she managed to make a name for herself in Britain, earning a spot in Stardom in Japan.

Here, she joined Mina Shirakawa in the Club Venus faction. Mariah May became a big star in Japan, and earned interest from AEW and WWE. She chose Tony Khan’s promotion, and has been rewarded with an incredible storyline with Toni Storm, and a match at Wembley Stadium later this month.

Ahead of the Mariah May vs Toni Storm match, she spoke with The Daily Star about her journey to Wembley Stadium. Mariah May revealed that she learned how to “live poor” during her times on the UK indies and Japan.

She also learnt about how to show respect in the business, like shaking hands with everybody and always being polite.

“I’m not sure it’s relevant to AEW, but the biggest lesson I learnt was how to live poor. It was tough. I think the big thing is etiquette. From day one in the indies, I learned to introduce myself (yourself) to everyone. I think sometimes on the indies that feel silly, because everyone has different opinions on that – whether you should or shouldn’t do it. “

“It pays dividends though when you go somewhere like AEW or a Stardom or any kind of larger company because it just shows you respect the business and care about it, like in any job you should introduce yourself to anybody.”
