William Regal is one of Great Britain’s best ever wrestlers, with a career unlike any other.
He lived through multiple eras of wrestling. Starting out in the carnivals of Blackpool, he was trained by Marty Jones and given the opportunity to tag with Big Daddy on World of Sport.
Outgrowing his position, he travelled Europe before landing in WCW, and eventually the WWE. Despite WCW and WWE firing William Regal multiple times, he spent over two decades with the latter, becoming an important figure in the ring, and backstage.
His career ended with a secret match with Sami Zayn. This put an end to over 30-years of greatness, with few wrestlers having as impressive a canon of matches as William Regal.
5. vs Wild Pegasus – NJPW G1 Climax Special 1995
4. vs Shinya Hashimoto – NJPW Battle Rush 1995
3. vs Dean Ambrose – FCW TV 7/6/11
2. vs Antonio Cesaro – NXT 21/11/13
While this was his final televised match, it wasn’t the end of the Englishman’s career. William Regal’s last match was a behind-closed-door bout with Sami Zayn in Dubai, although I doubt it touched the sides of this NXT masterpiece.
1. vs Chris Benoit – 3rd Annual Brian Pillman Memorial Show
While many thought William Regal vs Chris Benoit was the match that got the Englishman re-signed to the WWE, that is false. However, it only added to the legend of the iconic bout, which is definitely William Regal’s best match.
